“SAFD Firearms Certification”
Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6, 2019, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM
Silver Spring Black Box Theatre, 8641 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring, MD 20910
Guns are many things; dangerous, pervasive, persuasive, polarizing, terrifying, threatening and even life-saving. They are all of these things (and more) and, if you spend any time at all doing theatre, you will eventually have to handle one on stage. In some situations you may even be called upon to handle a blank-firing weapon; with smoke, flame, thunderous sound and potentially lethal consequences if mishandled. With proper training these moments can be both theatrically transformative and (absolutely must) be safe and worry-free for actors, crew and audience.
This Society of American Fight Directors Theatrical Firearms Safety Certification workshop encompasses more than 14 hours of training over the course of two days and will be taught by SAFD Fight Director and Theatrical Firearms Instructor Robb Hunter. In this course we will learn the terminology for the most common types of firearms and ammunition, the protocols for handling these firearms, techniques for gun wrangling on a set or on stage, procedures for cleaning these weapons, as well as protocols for handling jamming and other potential firearm malfunctions (which will happen), a brief history of firearms, and of course, we will fire many rounds through several different types of blank firing guns and will stage a “shootout” on the second day. At the end of the workshop there will be a test with both a written and a practical portion. All firearms, ammunition, hearing protection and eye protection will be provided for you although you may bring your own hearing and eye protection if you so desire (subject to instructor approval). This course has no prerequisites.
Enrollment is limited to 20 participants.

“Introduction to Theatrical Firearms”
Saturday, November 4, 2017, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Guns, especially handguns, are becoming more common in contemporary theatre. Yet few actors, technicians, producers or directors understand exactly what constitutes a stage-safe gun and how they should be handled on stage and backstage. Robb Hunter, a certified fight director with the Society of American Fight Directors, will cover these and other topics in a hands-on, three-hour workshop. The firearms workshop fee is $60 and space is limited.
The location for most workshops (except the SAFD firearms one in January 2019) is:
RCP Rehearsal Hall
264 Sunset Park Drive
Herndon, VA 20170
Our location is on the east side of the Sunset Business Park, facing the Fairfax County Parkway.
