This class is 14 +

Taught by Jeremy Smith

For when "we'll just jury rig it", or "3 hours of sleep" turn out to be a bad idea backstage. This workshop will take participants through a few different methods of handling common backstage injuries, as well as offering suggestions for methods to prevent them in the first place.

Class Level: Beginner

Sunday, July 13, 2025 @ 9am to 12noon

at the Reston Players’ Lindsay C. Petersen Rehearsal Hall
264 Sunset Park Drive, Herndon, Va 20170

Jeremy Smith spent a great deal of time in a theatre growing up with his father who taught theatre at Fairfax High School. As he got older, he enjoyed the technical side more than the stage itself, doing carpentry, set work, running, and props. At the same time, he joined the National Ski Patrol, and became an EMT in Prince William County. He also began attending the Virginia Thespian Festival back in the Seventh Grade, and has attended every year since. Over time he realized that there were a number of common injuries that occur in a theatrical setting, and that none of the many workshops offered at the festival did much to address them. As such, he began teaching a Backstage First Aid workshop in January of 2020. He has taught that workshop every year since (excluding 2021), and currently acting as the Chief Safety Officer on the board.

We acknowledge that our venue is located on the unceded lands of the Whonkentia Manahoac people and the area built using enslaved labor.

The Noble Blades believe discrimination, harassment, inequality, racism and abuse have no place in the theatre community, stage combat community, or in society as a whole. Regardless of whether theatre is at the community or regional level, we strongly believe that historically excluded groups have voices worth hearing and should be amplified in all areas of theatre and the arts.
